Health Canada Launches New Task Force to Speed Drug Access and Strengthen Life Sciences

Health Canada has launched a new Pharmaceutical and Life Sciences Sector Task Force in a move that links faster access to medicines with the broader strength of Canada’s life sciences sector. The announcement shows how drug policy is increasingly being treated not only as a health issue, but also as part of the country’s innovation and competitiveness agenda.
The task force will bring together leaders from pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms and research and policy circles to help shape recommendations for a faster and more coordinated system. The federal government says the goal is to improve timely access to medicines while building a stronger environment for growth and investment in the sector.
One of the most notable points in the announcement is that aligned reviews between regulators and health technology assessment bodies have reduced the time between authorization and reimbursement recommendations by more than 80% over the past two years. That does not solve every concern around pricing or coverage, but it does suggest Ottawa is trying to shorten the distance between approval and real patient access while backing a sector that supports tens of thousands of highly skilled jobs across Canada.
