Alberta separatist organizers have intensified their push for an independence referendum, deploying canvassers across the province to collect the signatures required under Alberta’s citizen initiative rules.

The petition window runs from January 3 to May 2, 2026, and the campaign must submit 177,732 valid signatures to advance to the next stage, according to Elections Alberta.

Reuters reported that the latest surge in activity followed staff-level meetings held in Washington in January, where individuals linked to the campaign met with U.S. State Department officials to gauge reactions to the prospect of an independent Alberta. A State Department official said the contacts were conducted at the working level, involved no senior decision-makers, and would not continue.

In Canada, Prime Minister Mark Carney said he expects Washington to respect Canadian sovereignty amid the reporting on those discussions.

Even with the increased organizing, polling cited by Reuters suggests separation remains a minority view in Alberta, with most respondents favouring the province staying within Canada.
