British Columbia is set to observe a day of mourning on Thursday following the deadly shootings in Tumbler Ridge, as the investigation continues and the community grapples with the aftermath.

The National Flag of Canada is also being flown at half-mast on all federal government buildings and establishments across the country, including the Peace Tower in Ottawa, until sunset on February 17, 2026, according to an official half-masting notice.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said officers responded to reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School on February 10. Police later confirmed nine people, including the shooter, died in connection with the incident, and two female victims (ages 12 and 19) remain in serious condition in hospital.

BC RCMP Major Crime has assumed conduct of the investigation, and police say they believe the suspect acted alone and there are no outstanding suspects, as investigators work to determine the full circumstances and motive.

Speaking in the House of Commons of Canada, the Prime Minister said “Canada stands with” Tumbler Ridge and noted federal coordination with the province to support the community.
