Bill Gates has warned that increasingly powerful artificial intelligence could be exploited by people with malicious intent to trigger catastrophes capable of causing as many as one billion deaths, as he called for stronger government oversight of the rapidly advancing technology.
Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, the Microsoft co-founder said AI had reached a level of power that could enable events causing casualties on an unprecedented scale, particularly when advanced systems are combined with individuals seeking to cause harm.
Gates argued that technology companies should not be left to police themselves, saying lawmakers and law-enforcement agencies need to play a direct role in establishing safeguards, monitoring systems and rules governing the most powerful AI models.
His warning comes as governments and technology companies face growing pressure to balance the potential benefits of AI with concerns over cyberattacks, biological threats and other ways increasingly capable systems could be misused. Gates recently told Reuters that governments worldwide remain significantly behind the pace of AI development.
