The Canadian Armed Forces say applications to join the Regular Force are up nearly 13% so far in the 2025-26 fiscal year compared with the same period last year, signalling improved interest after years of missed recruiting targets.
The update follows a stronger year for actual enrollments. Canada’s defence ministry said the CAF enrolled 6,706 new Regular Force members between April 1, 2024 and March 31, 2025, a 55% increase year over year and the highest level in a decade, in a statement responding to the Auditor General.
The Auditor General’s findings have highlighted ongoing bottlenecks in recruiting and training, warning the CAF did not recruit and train enough applicants to meet operational requirements over 2022-2025.
Ottawa has also pointed to reforms aimed at speeding up the process, including measures that allow applicants to begin training while certain administrative steps continue, alongside broader recruitment modernization efforts.
