Canada ends Islamophobia envoy role, launches new council

Canada’s federal government will no longer maintain stand-alone envoys dedicated to combatting Islamophobia and antisemitism, according to Canadian Identity and Culture Minister Marc Miller. The move effectively ends the Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia role, held since January 2023 by Amira Elghawaby, and shifts the work into a broader advisory structure.
The government says the two roles will be folded into a new Advisory Council on Rights, Equality and Inclusion, made up of academics, experts, and community leaders tasked with fostering social cohesion and helping guide federal efforts to combat racism and hate in all forms.
Miller told reporters the council would recognize Islamophobia and antisemitism, while placing emphasis on national unity and “bringing people together.” The department added that transition details and appointments will be finalized in the coming weeks.
