Prime Minister Mark Carney has extended Eid al-Fitr greetings to Muslims in Canada and around the world in an official statement issued from Ottawa on March 19, 2026. He said the occasion marks the end of Ramadan and the beginning of days of family gatherings, celebration, and reflection on the spiritual lessons of the holy month.
Carney said Muslims will spend the coming days with family and friends, sharing meals, exchanging gifts, reciting prayers, and celebrating the holiday in a spirit of gratitude and togetherness. He also referred to Zakat al-Fitr as an act of charity that reflects the generosity at the heart of Islam.
The prime minister added that Eid al-Fitr highlights the values of community, unity, and faith, and said those same values are reflected in the many contributions Canadian Muslims make to building a stronger and more resilient country.
The statement comes at a time when major religious occasions continue to carry strong public and political resonance in Canada, especially for large and active communities such as Canadian Muslims. In that sense, the message also serves as an official recognition of the place Muslims hold in Canada’s public life and social fabric. Carney closed the statement by wishing everyone celebrating a blessed and happy Eid al-Fitr.
