Toronto’s hotel market is already showing World Cup 2026 pressure, with rate spikes clustering around the city’s match window, especially ahead of Canada’s June 12, 2026 opener.
According to an analysis cited in Canadian reporting, the average cost of a two-night stay in Toronto rose from $267 in late May to $487 during the opening-match window, an average increase of about 78%. Reports described Toronto as the least affected among the tournament’s 16 host cities, but the jump is still significant over a short period for fans and families planning travel.
Toronto is set to host six matches during the tournament, with demand expected from international supporters, team delegations, media, sponsors, and visitors travelling to be part of the citywide atmosphere.
Beyond demand, the final bill is also influenced by a temporary tax change. The City of Toronto increased its Municipal Accommodation Tax on hotels and short-term rentals from 6% to 8.5% for the period from June 1, 2025 through July 31, 2026. While the tax does not explain the full rate jump, it adds to the total cost on peak nights.
