General Motors has issued safety recalls for certain popular trucks and full-size SUVs after a transmission-related defect was linked to a risk of rear-wheel lock-up while driving, a condition that can increase the chance of losing control and crashing.
In Canada, Transport Canada’s database lists 2,071 affected vehicles, covering 2022 model-year Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, and Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV.
U.S. safety filings describe the issue as potential excessive wear inside the transmission control valve body, which can lead to a gradual loss of pressure and harsh shifting. In rare cases, the rear wheels may lock momentarily or remain locked until the vehicle comes to a stop.
The remedy is a dealer-installed software update to the transmission control module. The update is designed to monitor valve performance, detect excessive wear early, and, if needed, limit the transmission to fifth gear while triggering warning messages, reducing the likelihood of a lock-up event.
Owner notification letters are expected to begin mailing on March 30, 2026, according to the recall documents.
