How is Canada trying to reduce violence at the source? New funding for 18 organizations engages men and boys in prevention

Women and Gender Equality Canada has announced close to $2 million in funding for 18 organizations across the country to support initiatives that engage men and boys in preventing gender-based violence. The funding builds on an earlier federal investment of more than $14.3 million in the same projects, signalling a stronger focus on prevention in families, schools, workplaces, and communities.
These initiatives go beyond general awareness. They include practical work around respect, consent, healthy relationships, and safe intervention, alongside programs designed for newcomers, youth settings, and workplace environments. The broader message is clear: reducing violence means addressing its roots earlier, not only responding after harm has already occurred.
The community value of this funding lies in widening responsibility. The issue is no longer framed only as a women’s issue, but as a shared social responsibility in which men and boys are part of the solution. In that sense, the investment can help expand local programs that support safer homes, healthier environments, and stronger prevention before harmful behaviour turns into violence.
