Manitoba has announced it will freeze the maximum retail price for one litre cartons of milk throughout 2026, a move the province says is aimed at keeping a basic staple affordable amid ongoing cost of living pressures.
According to reporting on the decision, Manitoba currently sets maximum prices for one litre milk, with caps ranging from about $1.93 per litre for skim milk to about $2.10 per litre for whole milk, with small adjustments in some rural areas. Manitoba is among a small number of provinces that still regulate retail milk prices.
Premier Wab Kinew said the freeze currently focuses on one litre containers, while the province considers whether to expand milk price regulation to larger sizes, such as two and four litre formats, as part of broader affordability measures.
