NDP awaits leadership result in Winnipeg as party closes a pivotal convention

Canada’s New Democratic Party is heading into one of its most consequential federal moments today as delegates gather in Winnipeg for the final day of the party’s national convention, where the new leader is scheduled to be announced. The leadership decision comes at a difficult time for the party, which is trying to rebuild its national relevance after a steep political setback.
Members voted from March 9 to March 28, with the official result set for Sunday, March 29. The ballot includes five candidates: Rob Ashton, Tanille Johnston, Avi Lewis, Heather McPherson and Tony McQuail. Party materials and recent reporting also point to strong organizational interest around the race, with more than 100,000 members eligible in the broader process and about 2,000 delegates expected in Winnipeg.
At the time of review, no official winner had yet appeared in the open sources available. That means the story should still be treated as a live political development rather than a closed result. Reports suggesting that Avi Lewis or Heather McPherson were seen as leading contenders reflect convention expectations, not a confirmed outcome.
The real significance of today’s announcement lies in what comes next. The party is not only choosing a new leader, but also testing whether it can find a figure capable of rebuilding morale, relevance and parliamentary weight in the months ahead.
