An alleged assault involving a sidewalk snowplow operator in Peterborough, Ontario has renewed debate about the safety of municipal winter maintenance workers, after police said a resident opened the door of an active snow clearing machine and twice tried to remove the operator’s hearing protection while the worker was clearing a sidewalk.
Peterborough Police said the incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. on February 11, 2026 near Marsh Avenue and Broadway Boulevard. Police said they reviewed video of the incident and later arrested and charged a 56 year old Peterborough man with assault, with a court appearance scheduled for May 12, 2026.
Local coverage said the city’s public works director urged residents not to engage operators and to give them space to do the work, while CUPE Local 504 said the incident left members unsettled and pointed to a broader pattern of harassment and intimidation during winter operations.
The Association of Ontario Road Supervisors (AORS) has also warned of escalating threats and interference directed at winter maintenance crews, citing reports ranging from objects thrown at active equipment to threats against operators and deliberate obstruction that can delay operations and ripple into emergency response, school transportation and community safety.
