New data from Statistics Canada show that Ottawa recorded the highest police-reported hate crime rate among Canada’s major cities in 2024, at 27.7 incidents per 100,000 people, with 356 incidents reported during the year. That compares with a rate of 30.9 in 2023 and 27.0 in 2022. The official tables specify that “Ottawa” refers to the Ontario side of the Ottawa-Gatineau census metropolitan area.

The same data place Ottawa ahead of Halifax at 20.7 incidents per 100,000, Toronto at 20.1, Vancouver at 14.9, and Montreal at 10.9. The figures highlight a troubling local picture in the capital, especially since the dataset reflects police-reported incidents, including both confirmed and suspected hate crimes.

Nationally, Statistics Canada reported 4,882 police-reported hate crimes in 2024, up 1 per cent from 2023 after a 34 per cent jump the year before. Hate crimes targeting race or ethnicity rose 8 per cent, while those targeting sexual orientation fell 26 per cent and religion-related hate crimes were broadly stable.
