Pearson travel tips after the storm: how to cut delays and handle cancellations

Toronto, airlines and Toronto Pearson are working through recovery after major storm-related disruptions. Canada saw more than 500 cancellations on Sunday, followed by 300-plus additional cancellations by 5 p.m. Monday, according to aviation analytics cited by The Canadian Press.
The report said Pearson recorded at least 152 cancelled departures, about 33% of scheduled outbound flights, while the airport warned delays could continue as cleanup operations remain underway.
For travellers flying during the recovery window, key steps include:
- Check flight status directly with the airline (app or website) before leaving home, as schedules can change quickly.
- If a weather waiver is in place, rebook early via the app or call centre rather than relying on in-terminal lines.
- Allow extra time to reach the airport due to slow roads and possible congestion at drop-off areas.
- Pack essentials in carry-on luggage (charger, medication, an extra layer) in case delays stretch longer than expected.
- Keep booking details and airline notifications available, as they may be needed during rebooking or service requests
