Canadians in Quebec find warmth as a local restaurant opens its doors during a deep freeze

A small St-Denis Street restaurant opened as an informal warming space, offering free hot chai and a place to rest as wind chills reached dangerous levels in recent cold snaps, according to a CityNews report.
The report says the effort began on Jan. 23 and drew strong community turnout over three days, with more than 52 cups served and demand rising enough to run out of cups on day two.
Encouraged by the response, the restaurant extended the initiative through March 1, operating 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday to Sunday, noting that even milder subzero temperatures can still pose serious frostbite risk for people without adequate shelter.
The story also highlights the need to coordinate community help with organizations already serving vulnerable populations, and notes that city officials have a formal process to recognize warming centres, including assessment, registration, and inspection.
