Several York Regional Police said a seven-month organized crime and corruption investigation known as Project South has led to charges against seven serving Toronto Police Service officers and one retired officer, among 27 accused. Investigators say the case includes allegations tied to a murder plot targeting a man working at an Ontario correctional institution.

Police say the probe began in June 2025 after they detected and stopped a conspiracy to commit murder at a home in York Region. They allege a suspect vehicle rammed a marked police cruiser stationed at the residence on June 20, and three suspects were arrested at the scene.

Investigators further allege unlawful access to police databases and the distribution of confidential information, with some addresses later linked to extortion, commercial robberies, and shootings. The case also includes alleged bribery to obstruct enforcement actions, obstruction-related allegations, drug trafficking charges, and an allegation of theft of personal identification documents from a police facility.

Authorities emphasized the allegations have not been proven in court and the investigation remains ongoing.
