Trump Revives 51st State Rhetoric as Canada Trade Dispute Deepens

U.S. President Donald Trump said Sunday that Canada "wants the benefits of being a State, without being one," in his first direct remarks since trade negotiations between Washington and Ottawa collapsed and new U.S. tariffs took effect.

Writing on Truth Social, Trump also accused Canada of imposing heavy tariffs on American farmers for years, ending his post with: "No more!!!"

The statement revived Trump's repeated suggestion that Canada should become the 51st U.S. state, rhetoric he has used several times since returning to the White House as tensions between the two countries have intensified.

The comments came after the United States imposed 50% tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods on Saturday following the breakdown of negotiations. Prime Minister Mark Carney's government has announced dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs beginning September 8.

Carney has said Washington introduced last-minute conditions that would have restricted Canada's ability to negotiate trade agreements with other countries, calling the issue a matter of Canadian sovereignty. U.S. officials dispute Ottawa's account and say Canada introduced new demands and backed away from earlier commitments.
