Grocery benefit payment due Monday for eligible Canadians

Eligible Canadians are set to receive the next quarterly payment of the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit on Monday, October 5, as the federal program continues to support lower- and modest-income households facing higher food and everyday living costs.
The October payment is the second one issued under the program’s new name following the July cycle. Eligibility and payment amounts are based on a recipient’s 2025 tax return, family situation, number of eligible children, and adjusted family net income.
For the current benefit year running from July 2026 to June 2027, the annual entitlement can reach up to C$679 for a single individual and C$890 for married or common-law couples, plus up to C$234 for each eligible child under 19. Those figures represent the maximum yearly amount, meaning recipients should not expect the full annual total to arrive in one payment.
Most eligible Canadians do not need to apply separately for the benefit, as the Canada Revenue Agency determines eligibility automatically after a tax return is filed. However, if a person’s quarterly amount is calculated at less than C$50, the CRA may have already issued the full yearly amount in July, meaning no separate payment would be sent in October.
The CRA advises recipients who do not see the payment in their account on time to wait 10 business days before contacting the agency. Canadians can also check their payment details and benefit status through their CRA online account.
