Trump Escalates Against Canada as Ottawa Prepares September 8 Trade Response

U.S. President Donald Trump escalated his criticism of Canada on Sunday following the collapse of trade negotiations between the two countries, as Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government prepares to impose retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods beginning September 8.
Trump used his Truth Social platform to renew his criticism of Canadian trade policies, particularly measures affecting U.S. agricultural products, after talks between Ottawa and Washington failed to produce an agreement.
The escalation follows the introduction of new U.S. tariffs of 50 per cent on roughly US$20 billion worth of Canadian products. Carney has said Canada will respond on a dollar-for-dollar basis, with counter-tariffs targeting sectors including steel, dairy products, agricultural machinery, appliances, paper products and electronics.
The Canadian government says the retaliatory measures are scheduled to take effect on September 8.
Carney said negotiations broke down after Washington introduced conditions Canada considered economically unacceptable and unfair. He maintained that Ottawa would not accept an agreement that undermined Canada’s ability to make independent trade decisions or weakened key domestic industries.
The decision to walk away from the negotiations has received support from several Canadian political and industry leaders.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford backed Carney’s position and called for a strong Canadian response, while provincial and territorial leaders have continued to emphasize a “Team Canada” approach to the dispute.
Support has also emerged from parts of Canadian industry. Steel producers have argued that no agreement is preferable to a bad agreement, although business organizations have warned that escalating tariffs could increase costs and create further uncertainty for exporters and companies operating across the North American market.
