Land Rover has issued a major safety recall affecting nearly 25,000 SUVs in Canada because of a potential defect in the driver’s airbag system. The issue could prevent the airbag from deploying properly in a crash, increasing the risk of injury for drivers.

The affected vehicles are reported to include Land Rover Defender models from 2020 to 2026, Discovery models from 2021 to 2026, and Range Rover models from 2022 to 2026. A wider U.S. recall covers more than 250,000 SUVs from the same model families.

According to U.S. recall details, the problem is linked to the driver’s airbag clockspring connector, which may corrode over time. This could increase electrical resistance in the airbag circuit and, in some cases, stop the airbag from deploying during a collision.

The safety concern is serious because airbags are designed to reduce the risk of injury during crashes. If the driver’s airbag fails to deploy when needed, the driver may face a greater risk of harm, especially in frontal collisions.

Reports say a warning light may appear on the dashboard before the airbag system fails, giving owners an early sign that the vehicle needs service. Land Rover owners should not ignore any airbag warning light and should contact an authorized dealer as soon as possible.

Land Rover is expected to notify affected owners and direct them to dealerships for free repairs. The reported fix involves applying a protective lubricant to the affected connectors to help prevent corrosion and restore proper electrical performance.

In Canada, owners can check whether their vehicle is included by using the Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN, on Land Rover Canada’s official recall page. The VIN can usually be found at the base of the windshield on the driver’s side or on the driver-side door label.

Transport Canada also provides a public recalls database for vehicles, tires and child car seats, allowing drivers to search for safety recalls and report potential defects.

For Canadian drivers, the recall is not just a routine maintenance notice. Anyone who owns a Defender, Discovery or Range Rover from the affected years should check the VIN immediately and arrange service if their vehicle is included.
