Alberta’s legislature reconvened Tuesday as the provincial government prepares to table Budget 2026 on Thursday, with health care pressures and overall spending expected to dominate the debate.

Premier Danielle Smith has already signalled a major health item: a proposed 22% increase in physician spending to C$7.7 billion next fiscal year, including about C$450 million earmarked for recruitment and retention efforts.

While the government says the goal is a more sustainable system, the Opposition NDP argues outcomes have worsened and is pressing for clearer targets on how many physicians will be added and how quickly wait times and access will improve.

On the fiscal side, the government has pointed to weaker-than-expected oil prices as a key driver of expected deficits, with earlier provincial forecasts citing a multibillion-dollar shortfall for the current year under lower oil-price assumptions.

The Alberta government’s budget page lists Budget 2026 for Thursday, February 26, at approximately 3:15 p.m
