Canada to Restore Two-Year NEXUS Interview Deadline in April 2027

Canada will shorten the window for conditionally approved NEXUS applicants to schedule their enrolment interviews, restoring a two-year deadline beginning April 1, 2027, the Canada Border Services Agency announced on October 1. The change will apply to applicants who receive conditional approval on or after that date.

The program originally allowed applicants two years to arrange an interview, but the deadline was temporarily extended to five years as enrolment operations were disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic. CBSA said increased interview capacity now makes it possible to end that temporary measure.

Applicants conditionally approved on or after April 1, 2027 will have two years from their approval date to schedule the interview. Those approved before April 1, 2027 will remain under transitional rules: they must book within five years of their conditional approval or by April 1, 2029, whichever comes first.

CBSA is urging applicants who are already waiting for an interview to secure an appointment as soon as possible to prevent their applications from expiring. Conditional approval alone does not complete the process; applicants must satisfy the Canadian and U.S. interview requirements before receiving a NEXUS card.

The enrolment process includes identity verification, fingerprinting and questions from Canadian and U.S. border officers. Several interview arrangements are available, including joint interviews at designated U.S. land enrolment centres and other Canadian-U.S. enrolment options.

NEXUS is jointly administered by Canada and the United States and is designed to provide faster border processing for pre-approved, low-risk travellers. Membership is valid for five years, while the current non-refundable application fee is US$120. Applicants under 18 are exempt from the
