undreds of Albertans lined up in frigid conditions Thursday to sign a petition seeking to trigger a referendum on whether the province should separate from Canada and become an independent country. The signature drive, sanctioned by Elections Alberta, follows recent legislative changes that reduced the threshold of signatures required to compel such a vote.
Under current rules, organizers have until May 2, 2026 to collect approximately 177,732 validated signatures, equivalent to 10 per cent of votes cast in the last provincial election, before the petition can be considered for a referendum question. Once validated, the proposal could lead to a province‑wide vote on Alberta’s future within the Canadian federation.
Scenes from Stony Plain, west of Edmonton, showed long lines at community centers as residents persevered in sub‑zero temperatures to make their voices heard on the issue. Supporters argue the province should seek new arrangements to address economic and political grievances with the federal government in Ottawa.
Opponents of the separation movement have raised concerns about the economic and constitutional implications of a referendum and potential independence, but petition organizers remain optimistic about reaching the required threshold of signatures within the deadline
