Ottawa’s Algonquin College has announced it will suspend 37 academic programs starting in Fall 2026, a move that will lead to the layoff of approximately 200 staff members, mostly in administrative and support roles, along with reductions in academic positions.

The college confirmed that no current students will be forced to withdraw, and they will be allowed to complete their degrees. However, new admissions to the affected programs will stop starting in 2026.

College officials stated the decision is part of a broader strategy to ensure financial sustainability, amid serious challenges including a sharp drop in international student enrollment, a freeze on tuition fees, and rising operational and wage-related costs
