Parts of Canada are bracing for an Arctic cold wave as a frigid air mass deepens across the country, with Environment and Climate Change Canada issuing cold warnings for northern Ontario that forecast wind chills near -45 and potentially reaching -50 closer to Hudson Bay.


Environment Canada said the episode is expected to last multiple days, beginning Wednesday night, Jan. 21, and continuing through the weekend, with little daytime relief as Arctic air settles in.


In Ontario, forecasts cited by The Weather Network said the cold snap will intensify toward the weekend, with pockets of northern Ontario seeing temperatures near -40 during the peak.


Forecasts also point to a sharp drop in major cities, with Ottawa’s overnight low expected to reach about -28°C on Friday, Jan. 23, Montreal near -25°C, and Winnipeg near -31°C.


In the Greater Toronto Area, Environment Canada forecasts wind chills could dip into the -30s at times, prompting municipalities to open warming and emergency shelters as temperatures fall
