Bank of Canada warns of potential economic shock amid U.S. uncertainty

Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem warned of an "unusual" potential for fresh economic shocks as geopolitical risks rise and U.S. trade policy adds volatility, leaving Canada’s growth outlook more exposed to sudden disruptions.
Macklem made the remarks in a Reuters interview following the Bank’s decision on January 28 to hold its policy rate at 2.25%, noting that elevated uncertainty, especially tied to U.S. trade developments, makes it harder to predict the timing and direction of the next policy move.
He also pointed to the risk that escalating tariff threats and external shocks could weigh on business confidence and investment, increasing the sensitivity of Canada’s 2026–2027 growth path to trade-related disruptions.
