Carney Highlights ‘Historic’ LNG Canada Expansion to Double Export Capacity

Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday highlighted what his official itinerary described as a “historic investment” in Canada’s energy industry, after the partners behind LNG Canada approved a final investment decision to proceed with Phase 2 of the liquefied natural gas export facility in Kitimat, British Columbia.
The expansion will double LNG Canada’s production capacity from approximately 14 million tonnes to 28 million tonnes per year, adding two new liquefaction trains to the existing facility. LNG Canada described the expansion as one of the largest private-sector investments in the country.
The project is backed by Shell, PETRONAS, PetroChina, Mitsubishi Corporation and KOGAS. Ottawa has identified LNG Canada Phase 2 as a project of national significance as Canada seeks to expand energy exports and diversify trade beyond the United States.
The decision also clears the way for Phase 2 of the Coastal GasLink pipeline, which carries natural gas about 670 kilometres to Kitimat. TC Energy says the expansion will nearly double the pipeline’s current capacity of approximately 2.1 billion cubic feet per day through additional compressor stations and facility upgrades.
Federal documents have estimated that LNG Canada Phase 2 could attract approximately C$33 billion in private capital, although LNG Canada did not announce a single final price tag for the expansion Tuesday.
