Veteran baseball broadcaster Buck Martinez has announced his retirement, bringing to a close one of the most recognizable on-air careers in Canadian baseball, particularly through his long association with the Toronto Blue Jays broadcasts.
Martinez, 77, said the decision followed “many heartfelt conversations” with his wife, Arlene, after the 2025 season, and that it was time to step away from the booth and focus on the years ahead.
Over a career that spanned roles as a player, manager, and broadcaster, Martinez became a fixture for fans—calling more than 4,000 games and working across multiple networks before becoming a familiar voice on Sportsnet’s Blue Jays coverage.
Tributes from colleagues and fans quickly followed, highlighting Martinez’s influence on Canadian sports culture and the way long-running media figures become part of the public’s seasonal rituals—especially for baseball audiences who associate summer with the soundtrack of the game.
