Canada in 2026: Federal student loan forgiveness eligibility and who benefits

Federal guidance says Canada’s Canada Student Loan Forgiveness program expands practical access in 2026 following an expanded occupation list that became eligible as of Dec. 31, 2025, aiming to support essential services in eligible communities by reducing the repayment burden for qualified workers.
Under the official rules, borrowers must hold a Canada Student Loan in good standing, work in an eligible occupation in an eligible community, and complete a qualifying service period within a 12 month forgiveness window, including at least 400 hours of in person service. Applications must be submitted within 90 days of completing the qualifying period, and borrowers must reapply annually to remain eligible.
Eligible occupations in 2026 include family doctors and family medicine residents, multiple nursing categories, and newly eligible professions such as dentists, dental hygienists, early childhood educators, midwives, personal support workers, pharmacists, physiotherapists, psychologists, social workers, and K to 12 teachers. Professional licensing requirements apply, with limited exceptions depending on jurisdiction and role.
Eligible communities are defined as rural areas or population centres with 30,000 residents or fewer, with a postal code lookup tool used for preliminary screening, while final eligibility is confirmed through application assessment.
Critically, the program applies only to the federal portion of a student loan, not the provincial or territorial portion, and it does not cover private loans or lines of credit
