Statistics Canada data show food prices rose 6.2% in December 2025 compared with December 2024, underscoring renewed pressure on household budgets.
The agency also pointed to a sharp acceleration in restaurant food prices, up 8.5% year over year in December, a move it linked to a base-year effect after the temporary GST/HST tax break that started on December 14, 2024 and ended in February 2025.
In the United States, overall food inflation was 3.1% year over year in December 2025, while grocery (food at home) inflation was 2.4%, highlighting a noticeably faster pace in Canada.
OECD data for November 2025 show food inflation varied across the G7, with Japan above Canada in that month, meaning any claim that Canada leads the G7 depends on the month and the specific dataset used.
