From Grocery Aisles to Monthly Bills: New Federal Benefit Reaches Millions in Canada

Canada has begun issuing the first enhanced quarterly payment under the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, a federal support program designed to help low- and modest-income individuals and families manage the rising cost of groceries and everyday necessities.
According to Finance Canada, the payment follows a one-time June top-up and marks the start of a five-year enhancement to the former GST/HST credit system, now replaced by the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit. The federal government says the measure will support more than 12 million Canadians and provide additional help at a time when food and household costs remain a major pressure on many families.
The Canada Revenue Agency says the benefit provides tax-free quarterly payments to eligible individuals and families with low and modest incomes. Starting in July 2026, the benefit amount increases by 25%, with that enhanced level set to remain in place for five years, from 2026 to 2031.
For the 2026–27 benefit year, a family of four could receive up to $1,890, including the June one-time top-up, while a single eligible individual could receive up to $950. Finance Canada says these amounts include both the transition top-up and the longer-term increase under the new benefit.
The CRA lists the 2026 payment dates for the new benefit as July 3 and October 5, after the January and April payments were made under the previous GST/HST credit name. The agency notes that benefit amounts are recalculated every July based on the previous year’s tax return.
Most Canadians do not need to apply separately for the benefit. The CRA says people are automatically considered when they file their taxes, including for related provincial and territorial programs. This makes filing a tax return essential, even for people with little or no income, newcomers, young adults turning 19, and anyone who wants to make sure they are assessed for federal benefits.
The new benefit comes as affordability remains one of the most pressing issues for households across Canada. While the payment will not erase the broader cost-of-living challenge, it offers direct quarterly support for families and individuals trying to manage grocery bills, rent, utilities, transportation and other basic expenses.
