Canada Food Price Report 2026, produced by Dalhousie University’s Agri Food Analytics Lab, forecasts overall food prices rising 4 to 6 percent in 2026. The report estimates a family of four could spend up to 17,571.79 dollars on food in 2026, an increase of up to 994.63 dollars from 2025.
The report notes food prices remain about 27 percent higher than five years ago and flags affordability as a major concern for households.
Where increases may be strongest
Category forecasts show the largest jump in meat at 5 to 7 percent, with vegetables at 3 to 5 percent and restaurants at 4 to 6 percent, while fruit and seafood are projected lower.
What is driving the pressure
The report points to factors that could influence prices in 2026, including trade frictions with the United States, shifts across manufacturing and retail, labour markets, policy changes and the Canadian dollar outlook.
Simple ways to reduce the hit without sacrificing variety
Plan meals for the week and shop to a list
Use flexible proteins: poultry, legumes and canned fish when prices spike
Lean on seasonal and frozen produce for better value
Swap to lower cost store brands when quality is comparable
Food waste can be the easiest win
In Quebec, a study cited in local reporting estimated households throw out about 604 dollars worth of food per year, with a sizeable portion linked to confusion about best before dates.
Apps such as FoodHero promote discounted surplus groceries at participating stores, helping households save while reducing waste.
