Canada on Thursday joined a joint statement with the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Japan condemning what the leaders described as recent Iranian attacks on unarmed commercial vessels in the Gulf, attacks on civilian infrastructure including oil and gas installations, and the “de facto closure” of the Strait of Hormuz by Iranian forces. The statement was issued by the Prime Minister’s Office on March 19, 2026.
The statement called on Iran to immediately stop threats, mine-laying, drone and missile attacks, and other efforts to block commercial shipping through the strait. It also stressed that freedom of navigation is a fundamental principle of international law and said interference with shipping and global energy supply chains constitutes a threat to international peace and security.
The leaders also welcomed the International Energy Agency’s decision to authorize a coordinated release of strategic petroleum reserves and said they would take further steps to help stabilize energy markets and support the countries most affected. That places Canada’s position within a broader international effort focused not only on condemnation, but also on containing the economic fallout of the crisis.
