New Canadian poll opens an unusual debate: Is Ottawa moving closer to the European Union?

A new poll published on Monday, April 6, 2026, has opened an unusual debate in Canada after finding that 25 per cent of respondents think joining the European Union would be a good idea, while nearly six in 10 said the proposal is at least worth exploring further. The survey included 4,000 respondents in March and was conducted online, meaning it does not carry a conventional margin of error in the way random-sample polling does.

The debate is gaining traction at a moment when Canada is looking to broaden its economic and political options amid prolonged strain in its relationship with the United States. Bruce Anderson, Spark’s chief strategy officer, said part of that openness reflects a growing willingness among Canadians to reduce reliance on Washington after more than a year of tariffs under Donald Trump’s second administration. The discussion has also been fuelled by recent European calls to deepen ties with Canada.

That does not mean Canada is on a real path to EU membership. The European Union’s formal accession rules say an applicant must be a “European state,” while Prime Minister Mark Carney has signalled that he wants broader and closer ties with Europe without pursuing full membership. For now, the numbers point more to a shift in Canadian strategic thinking than to any immediate constitutional or diplomatic move.
