Canada Post workers face decisive ratification vote on tentative deal

Canada Post workers will begin voting between April 20 and May 30, 2026 on whether to ratify tentative agreements reached with the national mail carrier, a decisive step after a prolonged labour dispute that featured strikes and other service disruptions.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) said ratification meetings will be held during the voting window so eligible members in both the Urban and Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMC) units can cast ballots. The union’s national executive has recommended a “yes” vote, noting the deals only take effect if a majority of voters in each bargaining unit approves.
Reported terms of the five-year agreements would run through January 31, 2029 and include a 6.5% wage increase in year one and 3% in year two, with increases in the remaining three years tied to inflation as measured by the consumer price index. The package also includes enhanced health benefits, stronger job-security language for rural and suburban workers, and a weekend parcel-delivery model.
CUPW national president Jan Simpson said the union will also hold a strike vote alongside ratification meetings, arguing that a strong strike mandate would be needed if either agreement is rejected and bargaining resumes.
