Canada pushes Mercosur trade file forward after new official meeting with Brazil

Canada moved the Mercosur trade file back into clear strategic focus on Sunday after the federal government said International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu met Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira on the margins of the WTO’s 14th Ministerial Conference in Yaoundé. According to Ottawa’s official readout, the meeting was used to continue advancing progress on Canada-Mercosur free trade agreement negotiations, while also covering shared WTO priorities, including agriculture, and commercial opportunities to deepen Canada-Brazil ties.
The significance of the development goes beyond the meeting itself. Ottawa explicitly framed the discussion around trade diversification and stronger economic partnerships across the Americas, saying those efforts support sustainable growth and job creation in Canada, Brazil and Mercosur member countries. Earlier this month, the Canadian government also said Brazil is Canada’s largest trading partner in South America, with two-way merchandise trade reaching $14.7 billion in 2025, up 15.7 percent from a year earlier.
That is why the story carries wider strategic weight. Canada previously held public consultations from December 13, 2025, to January 27, 2026, on resuming Mercosur free trade negotiations, and Global Affairs Canada’s 2026-27 departmental plan lists significant progress on Mercosur among its trade priorities. Official Canadian material says Mercosur represented a $4.1 trillion economy with a population of 282 million in 2024, while Canada’s merchandise trade with the bloc totalled $15.8 billion that year. Reuters also reported on March 27 that officials from Canada, Brazil and Argentina expected a new round of talks in Brasília in April and were aiming for a deal by autumn 2026 if momentum holds.
Taken together, today’s announcement looks less like a routine bilateral readout and more like another sign that Canada is trying to turn the Mercosur file into a concrete pillar of its broader trade diversification strategy.
