Health Canada has recalled two traditional kohl eye cosmetic products after testing found lead levels above the permitted impurity limits for cosmetics, advising consumers to immediately stop using the affected products and return them for a refund.

The recall covers Mumtaz Herbal Kajal With Almond Oil for Sensitive Eyes and Al-Asmad Alharmain Zam Zam & Rose Water. Health Canada said both products contain lead above the impurity limits outlined in its guidance for heavy metals in cosmetics.

The company reported that 576 units of each affected product were sold in Canada between January and August 2026. The importer is Sara Islamic Store in Mississauga, Ontario, while the affected products originated in India and the United Arab Emirates.

Health Canada warns that lead is toxic, particularly to children, and can accumulate in the body through continued exposure even at low levels. Lead exposure has been associated with serious health effects including anemia, vomiting and diarrhea, as well as effects involving the brain, liver, kidneys, heart and immune system.

Traditional kohl, also known as kajal, surma and al-kohl, is widely used as an eye cosmetic in Middle Eastern, Asian and North African communities, according to Health Canada.

Consumers who have either recalled product should stop using it immediately and return it to Sara Islamic Store for a refund. As of August 28, 2026, the company had received no reports of incidents or injuries in Canada linked to the products.
