Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to China from Jan 13 to Jan 17 2026, in the first official visit by a Canadian prime minister since 2017, according to the Prime Minister Office.
The PMO said Carney is expected to meet President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang, alongside government and business leaders, with talks set to focus on trade, energy, agriculture, and international security.
The trip comes as Ottawa seeks to diversify trade ties and reduce reliance on the U.S. market, amid ongoing pressure and uncertainty in North American trade relations.
Canada China relations have faced years of strain tied to political and trade disputes, including the 2018 Huawei case and subsequent detentions of two Canadians, as well as recent frictions involving tariffs and countermeasures on certain goods.
