Canada to Eliminate Internet and Cellphone Plan Change and Cancellation Fees Starting June 12

Canada’s telecom regulator, the CRTC, has eliminated the extra fees some providers charged to activate, change, or cancel internet and cellphone plans, in a consumer-focused move aimed at making it easier for users to switch to better offers without unexpected added costs. The new rules were announced on March 12 and will take effect on June 12, 2026.
The change has broad relevance for consumers across Canada, especially households, students, newcomers, and small businesses, as telecom costs remain a major pressure point for many users. The CRTC said the goal is to remove barriers that have discouraged customers from switching providers or plans because of extra charges.
Under the new rules, the measure applies to individual mobile customers, small business mobile customers, and individual home internet customers served by major providers. Published coverage said some of the fees had ranged from about C$30 to C$80, which the regulator viewed as a real obstacle to consumer choice and competition.
The decision does not take effect immediately, giving users time before June 12 to review their current contracts, compare available offers, and prepare to benefit from the new rules once they come into force. The CRTC also said the move is part of a broader consumer protection push, with further measures expected in the coming months to make it easier for people to compare plans and choose the services that best meet their needs, while existing protection codes are also set for review and simplification.
That makes this a strong service-oriented story for Tawasul News: its value is not tied to a single city, but to anyone in Canada paying for mobile or home internet service and looking for more flexibility without extra fees. Even though the original announcement was made two days earlier, the practical benefit remains current because the implementation date is still ahead.
