Canadian Finance Minister and National Revenue Minister François Philippe Champagne held talks in Beijing on trade and supply chain integrity during an official visit to China, according to Canada’s Finance Department, as Ottawa moves to broaden economic partnerships beyond the United States. The department said Champagne concluded the visit on April 3, 2026.

Finance Canada said Champagne met Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and Chinese Finance Minister Lan Fo’an, with discussions covering bilateral trade, investment, financial services and broader economic issues. The visit also produced a joint statement with People’s Bank of China Governor Pan Gongsheng to launch the Canada China Financial Working Group.

Reuters reported that Champagne said the talks also covered the impact of geopolitical tensions on oil and gas markets, as well as energy, pork, financial services and fair labour practices. He said Canada stressed the importance of supply chain integrity and trade conducted in line with international standards.

Ottawa describes China as Canada’s second largest single country trading partner. Finance Canada said two-way merchandise trade reached C$118.9 billion in 2024, while Reuters cited a 2025 figure of C$124.8 billion.
