Canada’s House of Commons is heading toward a special evening session on the military escalation tied to Iran after the Liberal government pushed to place the issue on Parliament’s agenda, reflecting growing concern over the impact of the war on Canadians in the region. By Monday, MPs had unanimously agreed to move ahead with a special parliamentary debate on the military escalation between the United States and Iran, bringing the issue to the center of Ottawa’s political agenda.

The move carries significance beyond foreign policy alone because it opens the door to scrutiny over Ottawa’s consular readiness, its plans to protect Canadian citizens, and the government’s broader position as the Middle East crisis expands. Prime Minister Mark Carney convened the Incident Response Group on Sunday with ministers and senior officials, while the government said Canada was not consulted, did not participate, and does not plan to participate in offensive military action against Iran. Ottawa also said it is continuing efforts to help Canadians who want to leave the region.

Bringing the issue formally before Parliament underscores the mounting pressure on the government to explain how it will balance diplomatic messaging, consular responsibility, and preparedness for any wider consequences that could affect Canada domestically.
