Researchers at Concordia University say a new “snow water availability” method using satellite data and climate reanalysis shows sharp declines in usable snow water in parts of the Canadian Rockies where major river headwaters originate, warning the impacts can extend to agriculture, hydropower, shipping and other sectors.

The findings were published in Communications Earth & Environment, and the university notes the most visible changes occurred in mid-elevation regions of the Rockies, with several drainage basins in B.C. and the Prairies among those most affected.
