Cancer Remained Canada’s Leading Cause of Death in 2024 as New Trends Raise Concern

Cancer remained the leading cause of death in Canada in 2024, accounting for 26.2 percent of all deaths, according to the latest data from Statistics Canada. It continued to rank as the top cause of death for both men and women and across every province and territory. Statistics Canada says cancer has held that position since the early 1990s, when it overtook heart disease as the country’s leading cause of death.
The latest projections show the burden is expected to remain heavy in the years ahead. The Canadian Cancer Society estimates that 254,100 new cancer cases and 87,900 cancer deaths will be recorded in Canada in 2026. That is equal to about 696 new diagnoses and 240 deaths every day nationwide. The figures also show that nine in 10 cancer cases are diagnosed in people over the age of 50, highlighting how population aging is adding pressure to the health-care system.
While progress has been recorded in some major cancers, including lung and colorectal cancer, the latest data also point to worrying increases in other types. Among women, incidence and death rates have risen for uterine cancer, while cases of melanoma and myeloma have also increased. Deaths related to liver and intrahepatic bile duct cancer are also moving upward. Among men, estimates show rising incidence in head and neck cancers, testicular cancer and Hodgkin lymphoma.
The picture goes beyond a major national statistic. It sends a clear health message to families across Canada: the cancer burden remains widespread, and the map of risk is changing as well. While some cancers are declining because of stronger prevention and earlier detection, the rise of other types is once again drawing attention to the importance of regular screening, awareness of symptoms, and timely access to diagnosis and treatment.
