Prime Minister Mark Carney has called three federal byelections for April 13, 2026, in the ridings of Scarborough Southwest and University–Rosedale in Ontario, and Terrebonne in Quebec, setting up an important parliamentary test in the coming weeks. Elections Canada said the electoral process is now officially underway in all three districts and confirmed that local offices have opened for voters and candidates.
The vote carries wider national significance because it could move the Liberals closer to a majority in the House of Commons. Published reports said the Liberals currently hold 169 seats and need 172 for a majority, a threshold that would allow the government to pass legislation without relying on opposition support.
The two Toronto-area ridings are widely seen as more favourable to the Liberals, while Terrebonne, in the Montreal area, is expected to be the most competitive contest. Terrebonne is drawing particular attention after the previous result in the riding was overturned, adding to the political weight of the byelection.
According to Elections Canada, advance voting will run from April 3 to April 6. Eligible voters may also cast ballots early at local Elections Canada offices until April 7 or apply to vote by mail before the deadline.
