Prime Minister Mark Carney said Ottawa supports U.S. action aimed at preventing Iran from obtaining or developing a nuclear weapon, while stressing Canada will not take a direct combat role in the conflict.
In a joint statement with Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, the government said Iran “must never be allowed” to acquire nuclear weapons, described Tehran as a major driver of regional instability, and reaffirmed Israel’s right to defend itself and protect its people.
The statement said Canada is closely monitoring Iran-related hostilities across the region and urged all parties to protect civilians. Ottawa also said it would take all possible measures to protect Canadians and Canadian diplomatic missions. Canadians in Iran were advised to shelter in place, and Canadians elsewhere in the region were urged to follow local guidance and take necessary precautions.
Reuters also reported Carney noted Canada was not involved in the military planning.
