Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that the security of Greenland falls within the scope of NATO’s collective defense responsibilities, while adding that decisions about the island’s future are to be made exclusively by Denmark and the people of Greenland.

Carney made the remarks during meetings in Paris amid mounting international tensions over Greenland’s strategic position in the Arctic, following public commentary from the U.S. administration on potential acquisition or influence over the territory.

Greenland, an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark, holds significant geopolitical and defense importance for NATO members as global competition in the Arctic intensifies.

European leaders have echoed that Greenland’s sovereignty and future decisions belong solely to Denmark and the Greenlandic people, and warned that external interference could affect alliance stability.

Local Greenlandic political leaders have also publicly rejected notions of American control, emphasizing their commitment to self-determination without outside pressure, a stance supported by Danish and European partners.
