Carney rules out an early Canada election: No plans to dissolve Parliament now

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney pushed back on speculation about an early federal election, saying his government is not looking at a spring vote. International reporting also quoted him as saying he is not planning a snap election later this year.
The question has resurfaced as Parliament returns and because Carney’s Liberals have governed with a minority since the April 28, 2025 election. In a minority Parliament, an early election can still happen if the prime minister seeks dissolution or if the government loses a confidence vote.
Under Canada’s fixed-date rules, the default timing for a general election is the third Monday in October in the fourth calendar year after the previous polling day. Based on the 2025 election, that fixed date lands on October 15, 2029, unless an earlier election is called
