Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney pushed back against any U.S. involvement in Canada’s internal affairs after reports said American officials met with leaders tied to the Alberta separatist movement.

Canadian media, citing a Financial Times report, said leaders of the Alberta Prosperity Project held three meetings with U.S. State Department officials in Washington since April 2025. Carney said he expects the U.S. administration to respect Canada’s sovereignty and that he is “always clear” about that in conversations with President Donald Trump. He added Trump has not raised separatist movements in Alberta or Quebec in their talks.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said she supports a united Canada while urging that any U.S. discussion about Alberta’s democratic process be confined to Albertans and Canadians. U.S. officials, speaking on background, said such meetings are part of routine engagement with civil society and involved no commitments.
