Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada is respecting its commitments under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), including provisions that restrict pursuing free-trade agreements with “non-market” economies. He was responding to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to impose a 100% tariff on Canadian goods if Ottawa moved toward a trade deal with Beijing.
Carney said Canada has “no intention” of pursuing a free-trade agreement with China, adding recent steps were aimed at resolving sector-specific tariff disputes rather than launching a broader FTA track
